KEVIN SINNOTT//A Retrospective: 1973 -2004

Before I had any sense of history; before my horizons had spread not far beyond the free-time jaunts of a village in South Wales , and the torch of ambition had barely flickered; before this, I was aware of the significance of Paul Cezanne's painting. Such is the effectiveness of modern mythology perhaps, that such a strange cultural juxtaposition could occur. Nevertheless it was through the fullness of the respect paid to Cezanne by the twentieth century that the nineteenth century master of Aix could have reached my outpost and, in turn, send me scuttling beyond.

Oil on Linen // 150 x 204cms.

This was painted during my last 6 months in London. I took it down to Wales with me. In 1994 it returned to London where it formed part of my second show with Flowers East (Shore Lines)

In August 1993 I returned to live in Wales, initially renting a modern bungalow in Llety Brongu, near Measteg. I used a damp double garage as my studio.
This is one of the first works executed in that garage. It continued a theme that I had started in London even though the setting resembled much of the South Wales shore line.

This is one of the first works executed in that garage. It continued a theme that I had started in London, indeed the the small improvisation on panel for this picture had already been completed there. I had carried down to Wales with me quite a number of such studies like a packet of seeds.

Though larger than the usual improvisations, this was executed in the same spirit and led to two large paintings one of which was set in a sterio typical American downtown street. They were all in response to 9/11 and I thought celebrated Hope and Renewal.
