KEVIN SINNOTT//A Retrospective: 1973 -2004

Before I had any sense of history; before my horizons had spread not far beyond the free-time jaunts of a village in South Wales , and the torch of ambition had barely flickered; before this, I was aware of the significance of Paul Cezanne's painting. Such is the effectiveness of modern mythology perhaps, that such a strange cultural juxtaposition could occur. Nevertheless it was through the fullness of the respect paid to Cezanne by the twentieth century that the nineteenth century master of Aix could have reached my outpost and, in turn, send me scuttling beyond.

When painting these very small studies on panel, I would try and empty everything out of my head and just hope for the benificial incident in the automatic application of paint on the many prepared panels that I would have lying about. I was still learning about oils. Many of such improvisations continue to form the basis for large works.

About this time I started doing very small studies on panel. I was still learning about oils. I called them improvisations as I didn't know what any of them would be about before I started to put paint on surface, many of such improvisations continue to form the basis for large works.

I recently (2004) discovered this painting in the collection of my good friends Hans Jorg and Hildegard Modlmayr in West Phalia, GDR. They had bought it on the secondary market in Art Cologne1998.

A very small study on panel which shows particularly well the nature of the process I was involved in. Many of such improvisations continue to form the basis for large works.

I continued to work whereby most of my subject matter was not initially intended but sort of emerging from an automatic or improvisational process. Even so, these very small studies on panel would from time to time recall actual places and events. This one recalls my visit to New York in the same year.
