KEVIN SINNOTT//A Retrospective: 1973 -2004


Before I had any sense of history; before my horizons had spread not far beyond the free-time jaunts of a village in South Wales , and the torch of ambition had barely flickered; before this, I was aware of the significance of Paul Cezanne's painting. Such is the effectiveness of modern mythology perhaps, that such a strange cultural juxtaposition could occur. Nevertheless it was through the fullness of the respect paid to Cezanne by the twentieth century that the nineteenth century master of Aix could have reached my outpost and, in turn, send me scuttling beyond.

This represents a kind of turning point.  The figures were less amputated; the subject more engaging.  It was exhibited along with the Post Office paintings at Icon in Birmingham.

This painting, along with a photograph of the artist, was used in the1981 New Year's edition of Harpers and Queen in the magazine's predictions of whom to look out for in the coming 12 months.

A kind of Cubism lingers.  Incidentally this painting is lost - if anyone knows of it's whereabouts I would be generously grateful as it is a particular favourite of Susan's.

This is one of my first works in oil paint since my  teens.  During the early 80s, I underwent a thorough aesthetic over-all.  There might have been a crisis in confidence.  I certainly became less excitable about moderism's theoretical buttresses.

A strange hybrid of the kind of amputated body parts usually associated with cubism and the light and shade of a more tradition pictorial space. Full of contradictions and indicative of a need for further resolution and further departure from the surface flatness of modernism and into the enrichment of illusion.

About this time I started doing very small studies on panel. I was still learning about oils.  I called them  improvisations as I didn't know what any of them would be about before I started to put paint on surface.

This is one of my earliest large oil paintings.  It was shown in my second one man show at  Blond Fine Art  1984, also in Chapter Art, Cardiff and upstairs in the Academy, where Bernard Jacobson saw it and suggested that I join his gallery.
